James Clerkin aka Semaj C started out djing at the age of 19 in 1995 in a small town in Ireland called
Sligo.
After spending his mid teens experimenting with different styles of House Music and using a single
old Goodmans Hi - Fi unit to try and mix all his Music together, by jaming the Tape, Phono and Cd Select Buttons down Together,
this would allow him to mix from cd to vinyl and visa versa and record all his favourite music onto a tape seamlessly....well
that was the idea!
Semaj C finally got to a Club where to his amazement the DJ's were playing the music that he had
been experimenting with, and each song was matched together perfectly. Little did he know that in a few years time he would
be Guesting regularly at this Club.
Semaj decided he had to have a set of decks for his bedroom, so he began saving up and started collecting
vinyl. Once he had a few months practice he became swamped with requests to play at House parties and small events.
He soon realised that he really loved djing in front of a crowd, so he started orgaising and DJing
at afterhours parties in Ireland, which ran weekly through to the early hours, these parties concentrated on deep
underground and funky house.
Due to the success of these parties he earned many Residencies and Guest slots in Bars and Clubs
in and around his Hometown, which include: Clarence, Journeyman, Bar Eille, Coopers. He was also invited to London to play
at the Priory.
Semaj regularly Guested at the Clarence Nightclub on both Saturday Nights and on Tuesday's Student
Nights
Since moving to London just over 1 year ago Semaj has played at neumerous Bars and Clubs: Insomina,
Asylum, Bibo - Cibo, Cocomo, Aquarium, Jerusalem to mention but a few.
He has also worked closely with promoters starting new club nights and student orientated nights,
organising flyers, flyer distribution, promotions and guest DJs.
Semaj's music has been described as the Catwalk of House, his sets are consistant and constructed
of Deep Underground Groovy House and lots of excellent Funky and Vocal House.
He says "I never buy a record unless it has that element of funk in it, because that
is what does it for me!"
